Microblading, Microshading, and Micro-feathering

So, what’s the difference? Unless you have been hiding under a rock lately, you have probably heard of microblading, the new semi-permanent version of eyebrow tattoos. Don’t worry. We’re not talking about a look that’s fake or unnatural; instead, the delicate, superfine strokes look supernatural and realistic in a way that they have never looked like before. Microblading’s recent popularity has spawned Microshading and micro feathering, two looks that are very different depending on your preferences. Here are some tips on how to spot the differences!

Microblading, A Lasting Look 

The original technique where it all started. The great aspect about microblading is that the work looks for just about anyone! Microblading is done by using a super fine pen instrument that is used to deposit pigment into the skin. Because the tip of the pen is so narrow and fine it creates patterns that are very convincing hair strokes to the naked eye. Another benefit comes from the technique being semi-permanent because the needle only reaches superficial layers of the skin. Prices for the procedure vary depending on the location, so expect a quality job to run somewhere between $700 to $1,500. Expect to have a touch up every month if you want the look to stay consistent.

Micro-feathering, A Blending Touchup

Micro-feathering is more specifically a form of microblading and is a new technique that creates natural fluffy looking eyebrows by using existing eyebrow hair as a base. You should expect Micro-feathering to be slightly more high maintenance when compared to microblading. It’s a two-part process and a growing out period that can last from six to twelve months. Six to eight weeks after the initial treatment and depending on how your skin responds, additional strokes are added.

The treatment typically doesn’t last as long as microblading, and everyone’s tends to respond differently to the treatment. Depending on many various factors Micro-feathering will usually last eight to 12 months.

Microshading, A Thick and Filled in Look

Microshading is more direct and creates the sensation of eyebrows being full and thick. It is done with either an electric hand tool or a manual tool which creates an effect that appears to look like eyebrow powder. The technique used to create this effect uses more of a method that uses multiple dots of pigments that is like the microblading’s pencil strokes. The difference is that microshading’s effect is semi-permanent.

What You Need to Know Before Going Under the Needle

We can all safely agree that having great eyebrows makes a huge difference in your looks because they frame your face. This is the basis for plucking and waxing when we’re younger, but unfortunately taking these actions can cause the hair on your brows to stop growing back. Thankfully, there’s microblading; however, microblading isn’t something you should do on a whim. Whoever does your eyebrows needs to be someone you trust because the results of the procedure will be on your face for the next 18 months to a year, but you also need to understand what microblading is like and that the immediate results of microblading may not be what you desired at first and that is all normal.  Below is all the information you need to know before deciding to have the microblading procedure done.

A Microblading procedure from start to finish typically takes an hour and a half to 2 hours. During this time, you will have a discussion, mark out your new brows, and get numbing gel before the procedure begins. The procedure can be uncomfortable and sting a little bit even with the numbing gel, but it’s not unbearable pain and no worse than what we go through every day with plucking and threading our eyebrows.

After the procedure, your eyebrows will look perfect…up close. It isn’t unusual when you look at the full effect to think that the eyebrows look the wrong color and belong on someone else’s face. They may look especially strange within the first 24 hours. The brows can often look dark because the pigment that is rubbed into the tiny new hairs remains on the skin and in the miniature scabs that will form as you heal. Slowly the surface will begin to fade, but to get a truly natural and understated look takes about two weeks.

During that first couple of days, there are a couple of things you need to do to.

  1. Use the Healing Balm provided. Most salons should give you a jar of healing balm to take home. Apply this balm throughout the day or whenever you  don’t mind looking like your foreheads a little wet to prevent scarring.
  2. Keep your eyebrows dry. Getting them wet can make you lose pigment and cause an infection.
  3. Go to the follow-up appointment. Most likely this appointment was part of your initial fee, and you need it anyway. About six weeks after your first visit you need to go to the salon to fill in any gaps that didn’t take pigment well or add pigment where it may not have lasted as well as it should have.

You’re Never Too Old

Dame Helen Mirren revealed the secret to her stunningly youthful looks. The 72-year-old actress and face of L’Oreal Cosmetics hasn’t been seriously interested in makeup for several years and was even quoted as saying “The irony is that – the older you get – the less you care. I think: ‘God, when I was young, and probably had much better skin, I wouldn’t dream of going out without mascara,” and “Now I really don’t mind. I mean, if you’re taking your dog for a walk at eight in the morning it doesn’t really matter.” However, after getting the role of ‘The Queen’ for the theatre show The Audience, she confessed that bold brows are the backbone of her beauty routine, and she got them by microblading.

Helen noticed a difference in her confidence after microblading and said, “I’ll tell you what I had done recently which I love – I got my eyebrows tattooed. Back to the Basics: Growing Your Brow Business

Eyebrows have gradually become more and more important in the beauty industry. If you don’t believe me, just look at the many ways you can style your eyebrows: tweezing, waxing, threading, and microblading. While we normally talk about permanent makeup on this blog, today we want to go back to the basics and discuss some simple tips for growing a traditional brow service.

1. Don’t do the Pencil test

Contrary to popular belief the pencil test isn’t the only way to determine how a brow should be shaped, and it doesn’t guarantee you’ll have perfect brows. Ideally, your brow will begin at the bridge of your nose, but many people have eyebrows that are far apart, which can mess with the symmetry of your brow. You should only use a pencil to determine where the arch of the brow should be. This arch usually begins at the outer edge of the Iris.

2. Trace Before You Pluck

Over-tweezing is a notorious beauty problem. The skinny brow may have been popular in the 90s, but it is most definitely not now. The key to keeping your client happy is to only tweeze the stragglers. The easiest way to do this is to take a white pencil and draw a line across the top and the bottom of the brow. This will be your guide for hair removal.

3. Start a Brow Routine

Do you know someone who tweezes religiously, like almost every day? They have to do this because their eyebrow hairs are all on a different schedule. Brow hair grows in 20-30 day cycles. The goal is to let all the hairs grow in at the same time and then to pull it all out at the same time.

Your job as the beautician is to try to get your clients to stretch their appointments out to every three weeks to get them and keep them on a schedule.

4. Carry a variety of products

To give your clients the best possible treatment you should always have a large stock of post-hair removal products like antibiotic ointment, soothing oil, and antiseptic. These products can help you avoid redness, bumps, and breakouts. Having a variety of products will be an asset to your business, but be sure to use the right ones for your client’s skin type and personal preferences.

If you aren’t having much success working on brows, try offering a free service.
